Anna plans a birthday party for Billy but is called out on a job leaving Hugo and Darcy in charge of the festivities. Max plans to kill himself but is unable to go through with it. Ray eventually agrees to let Max stay at his and Trish's home. En route to a conference in Brisbane, the airplane carrying Shirley crashes. Initial news reports are not promising and before long Tom arrives on Frank doorstep to inform him of Shirleys death.
